The starting point of this unusual photo journey is the city of Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan.
Osh is set on the historic Silk Road and is characterised by different ethnic groups: Kyrgyz, Uzbek and Uyghur, recognisably distinct in their national dress. Our cozy hotel is located near the city centre with nearby sights and park facilities. In the numerous bazaars one can discover handmade crafts and all kinds of merchandise.
Our first stop takes us south-west toward the border with Tajikistan, to a remote valley. Here shepherds live with their families in traditional yurts. In the background rise the snow giants of the Pamir mountains, including Peak Lenin rising a mighty 7143 m above sea level. Our accommodations here are simple home-stays with Kyrgyz families, who also prepare meals.
Then we return to Osh, to rest and prepare ourselves for the next stage, where we'll follow rough gravel roads to the heart of Kyrgyzstan: the Tien Shan mountains. Here we discover the vastness of this nearly deserted mountain range, full of secluded lakes, deep canyons, and amazing views. We'll have time to take pictures, because we'll have our camping gear with us or else we'll stay with the hospitable Kyrgyz in yurts or home-stays.
We'll round out the adventure alongside a grand lake at 1600 m elevation, which invites one not only for swimming but also offers fantastic views of the Tien Shan mountains.
